My Ayotte Custom drum set!

I managed to snag a dream/bucket list kit. It’s a 90s (Ray-era) Ayotte Custom drum set in natural maple finish with wood hoops (with inlays)! Sizes are 10” tom, 12” tom, 14” floor tom, 22” bass drum, matching 14x5” snare.

I never thought I would actually find one of these in my lifetime, let alone in the finish I most wanted! These things sound SOOOOOO good. Like, they sound 20% better than any other kit I own…even my 1970 Ludwig I’ve been gushing about for the past 20 years or so!

I’m so happy! 😁IMG_5237.jpegIMG_5238.jpeg

Nice kit!!

Did you have to learn not to hit those tall rims, or was no adjustment necessary? That would be my only concern.

Fabulous score!

Beautiful kit! I'm not OCD, but the first thing I would do is get all the logos to 12:00 o'clock. You know, the important stuff.
I think the original owner played them as a 4 piece, so the logo facing that direction makes sense. I haven’t swapped any heads on them yet, but when I do, the neurodivergent in me me will make sure to align the logos *juuuuust* so.

I was wondering about that, too. The rims aren’t *really* that tall when I’m playing. Definitely the tallest rims I’ve played on, but they’re not a problem.

What a beautiful kit. There is a video of Jerry Granelli playing a kit that looks like that which I watch frequently both for the playing and for the kit. God bless. I hope you get many years of enjoyment from it.

It looks great, and I am sure it sounds great. May it give you years of musical joy! Peace and goodwill.

Hey there! I was reminded that you were on the lookout for one of these, too, between the time I replied to the ad and when I bought it, because I *scoured* the internet for pictures/info/reviews/videos, and your posts kept on coming up. I certainly hope you find one soon, because they’re AWESOME!

I found mine locally, on Craigslist, a half-hour drive into town. Once I sell off the extras that came with it, I will probably have ended up paying about half of what they usually go for.

I have never heard of this before. When I swap out the heads and try some Remo/Evans heads on them, I will measure and keep my eyes on the depth of the hoops.
IKWYM. I first heard it from @Bo Eder who mentioned that he was unable to mix Aquarian heads with Remos or Evans for this very reason. Bo said it was just enough difference to be a distraction for him, the rims sitting a bit higher with Aquarians. Personally, I've not checked the difference, but Bo was always pretty accurate with his drum stuff.
