If you could have a day behind anyone else's kit (past or present), what kit would it be?

I learned a lot from Deep Purple's Machine Head, M.I.J. and Stome Bringer albums, in the 70s. Ian is an incredible drummer plus he is a fellow lefty. So I think it would be cool to sit behind his kit.

Don't know if this is super appropriate here but I've got a letter from him on the basement wall. He felt honored to be mentioned with John Bonham as influences. His kit on Machine head sounds beautiful. Check out his sound on Who do we think we are.....whoa.

If I could have a day behind Neil Peart's iconic drum kit, it would be an absolute dream come true. Neil, the legendary drummer of Rush, was a master of both drumming and showmanship, and his kits were as awe-inspiring as his playing.Neil Peart’s drum kits were works of art for sure. His most famous setup was the DW Time Machine kit, built to reflect Rush’s album Clockwork Angels.

yep...this one right here is the number one "behind the kit" dream kit for me

...and I would play The Camera Eye or Red Barchetta on it

followed by

2. Joe Morello's Ludwig kit from the Time Out era - and I would play Blue Rondo A La Turk on it
3. Gene Krupa's kit on the original recording of Sing, Sing, Sing - I would have to play Sing, Sing, Sing on it
4. Clive Burr's kit from Number of The Beast tour - and I would play Run To The Hills and Gangland on it
5. Phil Ehart's kit from Leftoverture - and would play Questions of My Childhood on it

I listened to all the deep purple albums back in the day. But those 3 really had an impact on me. I was pretty young. My brother was 9 years older than me and actually owned most of those albums. I did own made in Japan a Double live album. And I also had storm bringer on a 8 track.

Maybe the Lars signature kits got me thinking about this. I can guess what the top 4 or 5 selections might be across the board.

I would pick a variation of a theme. Mine would be Dale Crover's big blue Tama Artstar kit that he played live in the 1990's It's very Bonham inspired in its size. It was also a time when I believe he was still playing Zildjians.

I'd also get a kick our of sitting behind Lars' grey Justice kit, or Dave Lombardo's Season in the Abyss kit. Maybe I have a thing for crazy big kits.

Fantastic choice! I too thought this was an Artstar 2 Jewel Blue kit until I interviewed Dale on a recorded phone conversation 6 1/2 years ago. Turns out it is a CUSTOM color Crover came up with based off of his purple duster car in the early 90’s (if memory serves me correct). It was his first Tama kit they made for him in 1993/94.. The whole interview is almost mostly gear talk

He called it “Crover Purple”

That is bad-ass. And thanks, now that you say that, I remember hearing him, (hell, it could have been from your interview) say that it was purple. Did you happen to ask what became of that kit? It was really unique?

I really loved that period of the Melvins. I "think" he was using a Ludwig kti the first time I saw them opening for GWAR (in 1992?). Then later, in the duo-drummer years / Big Business years he and Cody started off with matching Tama Starclassics. I am always interested in iconic kits and what happened to them. Who knows? Maybe he has it sitting in the corner of their practice space.

There's some piece of me that will be restless to acquire an over-the-top Bonzo/Crover type kit. It just feels good grabbing a chunky drumstick and lay into large, loud drums. I have a Crover-lite kit. A Granstar in 14", 18", 22", with a nice, fat, 14" x 8" snare.

I agree @Kuu-Ra

here's it in song one if not the first album w/ the 'big set

double error/

Jerry Edmonton's Rogers silver sparkle kit. And Ian Paice's Ludwig silver sparkle kit that he used on "Machine Head."

Bob C hasn't been on this Forum in quite a few months, but apparently he has Jerry Edmonton's early 1970s Ludwig silver sparkle kit. Would really like to hear more stories about this, as he's quite the historian and writer.

I just thought of another more recent kit I would love to try - Peter Erskine’s yellow Tama Star Bubinga kit that he played when he was introduced as a Tama Endorser . The sound coming from those drums may be my all time favourite ever .

Being a lefty, and regretting not buying a reasonably priced Pearl Masters Reserve kit a couple of weeks ago when I had the chance, I'd go with an Ian Paice kit. One of my favourite rock drummers.

OR...if it's a one time only thing, maybe a Bonham Vistalite kit. That's something I'm pretty sure I'll never buy anyway, but it would be fun to try.

This is why one must ALWAYS impulse buy. The feeling of regretting buying something you didn't need is always far less than the feeling of regretting not buying something you did need.

Or something like that. You know, drummer math.

I KNOW!! My man..

Next time. On it.

Any pro drummer's four drum kit. That is how I roll (no pun intended). Peace and goodwill.
