Fired Up - date. New vocalists.

A few of you may remember the band I’ve been in since 2010. Our first singer regrettably suffered a mild case of death. Our last singer was with us for 8 years. A real talent, but things move on. This time, we decided to move to a twin lead vocal format.

We auditioned a load of singers. Some very talented, but as you all know - especially with singers - for sure, they need the chops, but ultimately, it’s all about the fit (can they park their ego at the door, availability, etc).

Anyhow, we unexpectedly had to bring the two new singers in for a very short notice gig. One try out + 1 rehearsal for a 2 hour show is quite an ask, but they were up for it. With the help of a few (temporary) pace notes to help them through the first gig, they pretty much nailed it. Not perfect of course, but plenty of room to grow with this new lineup & some gig miles.

A bit of Elton John, Journey, & Toto - (oh, & some Guru Origin series drums)

As you said there are some loose ends to tie up but I love the girls voice particularly because it’s a bit deep and she can cover male parts while potentially having a bit more range than a guy. The guy sounds really good too.

Why thank you sir! For sure, it’s a work in progress, but early signs are good. They’re both really easy to work with too. & that helps a lot.

The ladies in the audience where all over 6’ 6” Lew - can’t be a bad thing;)

I can see why. Handsome chap.

So is it just yourself and the guitarist from the original lineup now?

Almost, It’s actually just me. Original lineup formed in 2010. Our present guitarist joined in 2011.
It's almost like the reverse Spinal Tap. The drummer being the only original member. You guys sound great. I was in Aberdare last week and had I known you were playing might have been able to extend my stay!

Good ob’s on the reverse spinal tap!.

Next Wales gig is May 31st the Globe theatre, Hay on Wye. A really small local theatre - it’s like playing in a large living room. Kinda cool vibe. We strip the band down to basics for a gig like this, & charge very economical ticket prices accordingly.

I actually like the idea of two lead singers; especially a male and female voice. It opens your band up to so many options. What l like about these two singers is that both were able to make a sort of last-minute gig with little prep. That's a strong indicator of the type of person you want in any band. I'd keep them both!

So long as they maintain enthusiasm, they’re definitely keepers for sure. Really easy to work with, & yes, I was impressed by their willingness to jump straight in with both feet. Give it two or three gigs, & I reckon they’ll transition from just getting through the gig to actually “performing”.

The setlist mix (Elton, Journey, Toto) suggests a classic rock/pop vibe with some proggy touches, and the Guru Origin drums hint at either electronic elements or just killer gear nerdery. Either way, it sounds like a fun project.

Andy was the co-owner of Guru and did much of the design, engineering and manufacturing. So not just a hint of 'drum nerdery'. Andy is Nerd in Chief.
